8 Simple Steps You Can Take to Improve Your Office Security Today

  1. Install Locking Cabinets- Locking cabinets, cupboards, file desks, etc., will help to improve the security of materials in your office. Employees can store their items safely, and customer information will be more secure. Important papers can be kept hidden and stored safely.

  1. Keep Communication Open- This step is two-fold. The first step is to keep the communication lines open between you and your employees. Make sure employees can easily recognize if someone seems out of place, and help them feel comfortable speaking up. The second step is having communication options in the event of an emergency. This may be a speaker system or handheld communication devices for your management team.

No Soliciting- When you employ a “no soliciting” policy, you are improving your office security by restricting access to your building by people who may be attempting to access it in an effort to better understand the floor plan or inner workings of your office for later unlawful entry.

  1. Use an Access Control System- This is one of the most effective office security tools. Access control systems do just their name implies: they control who has access to your building. Keypad and card reader systems only allow people in who you have given access to. They have effective locking mechanisms, and you will be able to know exactly who has entered your building and when.

  2. ID Employees- It is best that employees in large companies wear identification cards or badges. This tells other employees that each person is supposed to be there.

  3. Have an Emergency Plan- Having a plan in case of emergencies will help to ensure your office security after other measures may have failed. This will help employees know what to do in the event of an intruder, etc.

  4. Make Sure No Employee Works Alone- Employees working alone have easy access to materials that they may otherwise be hesitant to access. Also, try not to have employees stay in the office late at night.

  5. Make Entrances Visible- For added office security, make sure entrances are visible. When entrances are visible to other employees, your security personnel, or a secretary, people who enter without permission can be spotted and identified more easily.
