If you are like most people, you want to know that your home has as much security for you and your family as possible. While no home is a veritable fortress, there are steps you can take to improve security at home.
1. Inspect – The first thing you should do is walk around your home, both inside and out, inspecting it as if you were a criminal intent upon gaining illegal access. If you put yourself in their shoes, you are more likely to recognize vulnerabilities in your home security.
2. Use Locks Properly – There are two things about your locks that will leave you vulnerable. One is not using them consistently. The other is having old, outdated locks that are easy to pick. Today’s locks are far superior and will give you a higher level of security. Don’t forget that keeping your windows locked is every bit as important as doors. This goes for balcony doors, as well. An often overlooked door is the garage door and the door from the garage into the home, so these have become a popular choice for burglars to use.
3. Change Locks – You should also consider changing your locks from time to time. It is wise to do so when you first move into a new residence, but if you have left your keys with anyone or had them out of your possession for some reason, you should consider changing the locks. This also goes for when you let an employee go, such as maid service. You do not know if they have made copies.
4. Alarm System / Video Surveillance – Newer technology in these types of systems can bring more security to your home than ever before. Not only do they deter a criminal, but they can also aid in apprehension.
